Where are GRSFers this winter? Part One

At the end of each summer season, members of the GRSF company disperse not just to the farthest reaches of the country to resume their careers and their studies, but to the farthest corners of the earth. Here’s what people have been up to:

Jonathan Gillard Daly (Seasons 1 - 5): currently: acting in Shaw’s Saint Joan at Repertory Theatre of St. Louis with Christopher Gerson (Seasons 1 - 5) and Tarah Flanagan (Seasons 4 & 5), who is playing the title role.

(Directed by GRSF Producing Director Paul Barnes). Jon just finished up a successful run in his play, The Daly News, at Milwaukee Chamber Theatre, and played Sherlock Holmes in Steven Dietz’s Sherlock Holmes — The Last Case at Indiana Repertory Theatre last fall. Jon returns to act in The Cherry Orchard at Milwaukee Repertory Theatre, where he is a resident company member, after his time in St. Louis.

Following the run of Saint Joan, Tarah will travel to Maine to appear in a new comedy, 13th of Paris at the Public Theatre of Maine, while Christopher will return to Los Angeles to resume Director of Photography duties on an upcoming feature film.

Michael Fitzpatrick (Seasons 2, 3, & 5) returned home to New York City and has acted in workshops of two new musicals (one of which is Broadway-bound), appeared on the NBC television series, “30 Rock”, and will head to Pioneer Theatre Company in Salt Lake City in mid-January to reprise his role as Lord Capulet in a production of Romeo and Juliet, to be directed by Paul Barnes.

Kim Martin-Cotten appeared in the “Roman Rep” at Washington, D.C.’s Shakespeare Theatre last summer, and will be part of the Goodman Theatre’s international tour of King Lear in 2009, reprising her role as Goneril opposite Stacey Keach. She’ll also be seen at the Goodman Theatre in Chicago this spring in a new play by Naomi Izuka, called Ghostwritten.

Jacques Roy (Seasons 1, 2, 3, & 4) will direct Shakespeare’s Measure for Measure for New York City’s Guerilla Shakespeare company, where he played Brutus in a recent production of Julius Caesar (with Kim Martin-Cotten in the title role). [You can find a review at nytheatre.com]

Evan Fuller (Seasons 1, & 5) is currently appearing in The Santaland Diaries with the Broadway Baby Dinner Theatre in Milwaukee, and will begin work on Tallgrass Gothic with the Caffeine Theatre in Chicago after the first of the year.

Chris Mixon (Seasons 4 & 5) is finishing up the run of a musical version of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol at the Denver Center Theatre Company, and will spend the spring in Orlando. Florida, where he will serve as artist-in-residence in the theatre department at Florida Central University and play Dogberry and Friar Francis in Much Ado About Nothing and Lancelot Gobbo in The Merchant of Venice at Shakespeare Festival or Orlando.

Brian Frederick (Seasons 1, 3, 4 & 5) has been in New York City since the end of the summer season, where he assistant directed a production of The Fourposter for the award-winning Keen Company, and will leave for Cedar City, Utah after the first of the year to play Duke Orsino in the Utah Shakespearean Festival’s educational touring production of Twelfth Night.

In the world of design, Scott Neale (set designer, seasons 4 & 5) has continued his work for theatres in St. Louis and Chicago, along with his design work for theme parks in Pennsylvania, Virginia, Florida, and Dubai, along with renovation plans for the Saint Louis Zoo.

Camille Assaf (costume designer, The Taming of the Shrew, season 5) co-designed costumes for the opening ceremonies of the 2008 Beijing Olympics, designed costumes for the world premiere production of a new rock opera, Where Elephants Weep in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, along with a production of Verdi’s Falstaff in France. Current and upcoming projects include a dance piece for New York’s Moving Theatre and Pride and Prejudice, for Playmakers’ Rep in North Carolina.

Josh Horvath (composer/sound designer, season 3), served as orchestrator/music producer/composer for Clay, the premiere production at New York’s Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts Theatre 3, provided sound design for the world premiere of Paula Vogel’s Christmas Civil War, directed by Tina Landau at the Long Wharf Theatre, and will serve as sound designer/orchestrator/music producer for the world premiere production of Venice at Los Angeles’s Mark Taper Forum. In between design assignments, Josh continues his faculty duties at Northwestern University.

C Andrew Maye, in addition to a full season of designs in the Twin Cities area, worked on both coasts: Producing Director of the Acadia Repertory Theatre on Mount Desert Island in Maine, he joined his wife Cheryl Willis to produce a full summer of high-quality theatre, and in October he designed the sound for a new production at the El Portal Theatre in Los Angeles. He also received a Playwright’s Center McKnight Theatre Artist Fellowship for 2008-09. But every year come June, his heart still pines for Winona...!

Lonnie Alcaraz (lighting designer, season 5), designed lights for a production of Beckett’s Endgame at UC Irvine, where he is on the theatre faculty, and also lit productions of a world premiere musical version of An Italian Straw Hat (South Coast Repertory Theatre, Costa Mesa, California), Culture Clash’s Water and Power (San Diego Repertory Theatre), and the annual production of La Posada Magica, also at South Coast Rep.

Meg Weedon (costume designer, Macbeth and The Merchant of Venice, seasons 4 & 5), returned to New York City where she supervises construction at Carelli’s Costumes, the major costuming house for most Broadway productions, major opera companies, and touring shows.
