A leader in Green Acres

(1/11/2009)

From: Rick Olsen

State Senator

As the chief Senate author of the bill which will repeal the changes made to the Green Acres program last year, I feel that a recent letter to the editor criticizing Sen. Sharon Erickson Ropes was unjustified.

As you all are aware, the changes to Green Acres resulted in unintended consequences that have adversely affected landowners throughout the state. From the start, Sen. Erickson Ropes has taken the lead to address the problems facing her constituents as a result of these changes.

She’s listened to the issues brought forth by her county assessors and the concerns of farmers in her district. She has participated in several meetings at the Capitol with the Department of Revenue, local

government officials, and agricultural advocacy groups where we have identified the problems and potential solutions regarding Green Acres.

She’s partnered with me as a co-author to my repeal bill. In her position as vice-chair, she vowed to bring legislation before the Senate Agriculture Committee to fix or repeal the changes. This hearing has been scheduled for Jan. 29.
