Sexual assault

From: Caryn Maloney

According to the National Victim Center, approximately one in four girls and one in ten boys will be sexually assaulted before the age of 18; approximately one in three women and one in seven men will be sexually assaulted at some point in their lives.

The Minnesota Coalition against Sexual Assault website states that only 16% - 20% of victims ever come forward and report a sexual assault, and, contrary to popular belief, in Minnesota 93% of sexual assault victims knew their assailant.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation reports that less than 2% of all sexual assault reports are false. This is the same rate of false reporting for all other major crimes.

Because sexual assault has recently made front page news, it is important to keep these statistics in mind. If you have been sexually assaulted, please know that there are advocates, investigators, community members that are here for you. You are not alone. If a friend comes to you reporting a sexual assault, please believe and support them. It is not your job to decide whether or not they are telling the truth, that is why we have investigators and law enforcement that do a wonderful job working with victims in our community. If you have any questions or need an advocate to talk to, please call the Women’s Resource Center at (507)452-4440 or visit our website
