The Winona area is fortunate to have active veterans’ organizations. Both veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1287 and American Legion Post 9 have full Honor Guards to provide last military rites to deceased veterans. It is very important to the families and the community to give the veterans the honor they deserve so much at their passing.
You may be surprised that not all communities are so fortunate. I have talked to veterans in much larger communities who told me that they are lucky to be able to have enough men at funerals to be able to fold the flag properly. I heard of one area where they actually had to use tape recorded rifle fire for the final 21 gun salute.
As recent news articles have pointed out, this is not always an easy job, but it always gets done. This is another reason that Winona is a great place to live.
