Hundreds of commuters into Winona have the joy every day of driving through the Arches, along Garvin Brook and over Stockton Hill. It’s a gorgeous drive – one of the best that Southeast Minnesota has to offer.
Now we learn that it may all be at risk. A Texas company, Eagle Materials, has gone to the Warren Township Board as it makes the rounds to acquire rights to dig a frac-sand mine on a ridge overlooking the Arches. This would be no quaint quarry. The scheme could mean hundreds of heavy-duty truckloads a day.
Imagine the visual impact. We stand to lose the beautiful Highway 14 gateway into Winona.
