The Special Athletic Competition Track & Field Event Committee would like to send out a huge thank-you to the many people and organizations for helping to make the May 19, 2017, event a success! One-hundred-and-eighty-six students from 22 area schools enrolled in kindergarten through high school competed in the frisbee and softball throws, ball kick, running long jump, 50-yard dash and relays at Paul Giel Field.
The Winona Senior High School Drum Corps greeted the athletes. The parade started after the National Anthem was performed by a WSHS athlete. This year’s Grand Marshal was Ray Felton to acknowledge his many years of volunteering with this event. Medals were presented to every athlete at the end of the parade. An estimated crowd of 700 enjoyed this event either as an athlete, school personnel, family member, classmate, and/or volunteer!
Thank you to the Winona Sunrisers Kiwanis who began this event 42 years ago and continue to support the committee in the planning of this event. Thank you to the Winona Area Public Schools administration and maintenance staff, SMU for willing to be an alternate location, Casey Indra for organizing the Hawks Nest, Myron Haug and Tim Gleason for leading the WSHS Drum Corps, WSHS Tech Nest for providing the live-stream, and to all the local businesses that donated to or supported the event. Thank you to Jerry Raddatz, The Foundation for WAPS, and Winona Clown Club-River City Rascals. And lastly, thank you to Ray Felton and Evan Meier for announcing, John Meier, Denise VanEtten, and Angie Lepsch for their computer work, Nate Emerson, Tanya Grabinski, Lisa Eddy, and Hallee Hoeppner for their help with the 50-yard dash and relays, the WSHS student leaders (Rhiannon, Ava, Mason, Abby, Luke, John, Laney, Griffin, Theo, Tova, Riley, Grace, Marissa, Garit, and Jack), and the 105 WSHS student volunteers.
We are already looking forward to next year’s event scheduled for May 18, 2018!
