Southeast Minnesota and Western Wisconsin Regional Science & Engineering Fair director and advisor to the Winona Middle School science fair
In the past the middle school science fair has benefited from a pool of judges from the colleges and universities in Winona. Unfortunately this year our pool of judges has diminished and we are in serious need of 20-30 judges from the community or from our institutions. I know it is possible to have a science fair without judges, but their presence brings a certain amount of respect and attention to presenting science by the exhibitors. They know they are being evaluated by professional people from outside the school. For most students it is there first competition and the first step in developing a public voice. Students at this age rarely seriously communicate with adults other than family and school staff and this fair gives them this opportunity.
The help and support from the universities in the past is much appreciated, and I know many will come through for us this year as well. Professionals from throughout the community working in labor, science, administration, and industry may participate.
The middle school science fair is on Wednesday, February 7, from 4-5:30 p.m. Orientation for judges will take place from 3:45-4 p.m. in room 101E of the Winona Middle School. You will be expected to evaluate five to eight projects.
