Lions’ update on Every Child’s Dream fundraising effort

From: Jack Krage

Every Child’s Dream-Winona is a fundraising effort to construct a playground in which all children may participate regardless of their physical or developmental ability. The city of Winona has 27 parks and 14 playgrounds; however, none of the playgrounds meet the needs of children with limited mobility. District 861 estimates that there are approximately 325 youth in Winona from age five through 18 that are deemed physically or developmentally disadvantaged such that they cannot participate in normal physical activity. These children are presently not served by the playground equipment in our parks.

The three Winona Lion’s Clubs, along with parents of special-needs children and several concerned citizens are working hard to raise the necessary funds to construct an all-inclusive playground adjacent to the bandshell in Lake Park. This will replace the equipment that is presently in place, which no longer meets Americans with Disabilities standards. The overall cost of this project is $675,000.

We still need to raise approximately $330,000. Although we have realized strong support from the community, we have much work ahead of us. Last month, we mailed over 1,100 packets to business owners and individuals throughout the city. Several thousand dollars were contributed as a result. We urge each of you to consider donating to this cause.

In addition to the mass mailing, we have written several grants and are optimistic that we will secure funding from a few of these. Our efforts will continue until this project is completed and all children will be able to enjoy our beautiful facility.

Please keep in mind that it is Every Child’s Dream to run, laugh and play alongside their peers. Help us make this dream come true.

Please send your donations to: Every Child’s Dream – Winona, 104 East Fourth Street, Winona, Minn., 55987. Make checks payable to Winona Community Foundation, and write Every Child’s Dream on the memo line.

Thank you in advance! The children are counting on you!
