(5/30/2018)

From: The Special Athletic Competition Track & Field Event Committee: Molli Kook, Pat Beckman, Mindy Reinardy, Camie Hughes, Kayla Spalding, Kellie Holte-Finlayson, Kristin Rodgers, Vicky Bronk, Amy Krzewinski, and Niall Meier

We would like to send out a huge thank you to the many people and organizations that helped make the May 18, 2018, event a success. Two-hundred and nineteen students from 14 school districts, enrolled in kindergarten through high school, competed in the Frisbee and softball throws, soccer ball kick, running long jump, 50-yard dash, and relays at Paul Giel Field.

The Winona Senior High School (WSHS) Drum Corps greeted the athletes. The parade started after the National Anthem was performed by a WSHS athlete. This year’s Grand Marshal was Amy Adams, Winona Area Public Schools (WAPS) director of special education, to acknowledge her support of the event and show appreciation of her leadership. Medals were presented to every athlete at the end of the parade. An estimated crowd of over 700 enjoyed this event, either as an athlete, family member, classmate, school personnel, or volunteer.

Thank you to the Winona Sunrisers Kiwanis who began this event 43 years ago and continue to support the committee in its planning. Thank you to the WAPS administration and maintenance staff, Saint Mary’s University for willing to be an alternate location, the businesses that donated to the event, Casey Indra for assisting with the use of Paul Giel Field, Myron Haug and Tim Gleason for leading the WSHS Drum Corps, and Jeremy Graves and the WSHS Tech Nest for providing the live-stream. Lastly, thank you to Ray Felton and Evan Meier for announcing; John Meier, Denise Van Etten, Jody Maroushek and Grace Rysted for their computer work; Tanya Grabinski and Lisa Eddy for their help with the 50-yard dash and relays; the WSHS student leaders (Luke, John, Laney, Griffin, Theo, Riley, Tova, Grace, Marissa, Jack, Garit, Paige, Chloe, and Dane); and the 100 WSHS student volunteers.

We are already looking forward to next year’s event, scheduled for May 17, 2019!
