They thought they were free

On May 7 of this year, at the direction of this president, the Department of Justice officially made kidnapping of children an official U.S. policy. In May alone over 2,000 children have been literally forced out the arms of their mothers. An 18-month-old baby and a four-year-old blind girl are just two examples of these actions by the Trump misadministration. These actions are intended to frighten any immigrants fleeing terrorism, criminal gangs, and extreme poverty who want to enter our country. Remember the days not long ago when the statue of liberty had inscribed on it: “Give me your tired, your poor your huddled masses yearning to breathe free ...” Those words are still written but its meaning is now meaningless under this fascist administration.

We are told that children are going into foster care or given to sponsors. Well almost 1,500 are missing and there are no records of with whom these children were placed. We are told that foster parents and sponsors are background checked. No, because we are now learning that some sponsors are human traffickers. Go to and watch a documentary titled “Frontline” from late April this year. A group ended up going to a large chicken operation in Ohio. They were forced to work in conditions so horrific that the phrase “concentration camp” would be too mild. And this has happened before in history. The children who survived the great genocide of 38 million Native Americans were taken from their families and locked into boarding schools. Beaten and starved to beat the Indian out of the man.

“They Thought They Were Free” is a book published in 1955 that I read in school about the rise of fascism in Hitler’s Germany in 1939. Hitler rounded up Jewish people and Germany did nothing. Hitler threatened his opponents; Germany did nothing. Hitler took children from parents; Germany did nothing. Hitler killed over 6 million Jewish people. It was too late for Germany. Look what happening now and insert U.S. for Germany. Trump hasn’t killed 6 million people, but this country murdered 38 million Natives.
