2019 Southeast Minnesota and Western Wisconsin Science and Engineering Fair director
Winona will host the Southeast Minnesota Western Wisconsin Regional Science and Engineering Fair on Friday March 1, 2019. Help us reach our goal of $5,000 in donations. Our fair is an affiliation of the Minnesota State Science & Engineering Fair (MSSEF). MSSEF is an annual competition that showcases Minnesota’s best and brightest students in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). Many of our fair’s participants come from rural Southeast Minnesota where opportunities to present their student research is limited.
This year’s regional fair will be hosted by Winona State University and students from throughout Southeast Minnesota and Western Wisconsin, who have limited opportunities to showcase their research will present as many as 100 papers and projects. Approximately 20 students will advance to the state fairs where they compete for awards totaling $15,000, sponsored by 40 government agencies, corporations, and professional scientific societies. One project from our region will go on to the International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) in Phoenix, Ariz., in May.
Our fair is entirely dependent on support from our local universities, businesses, and individuals. We have no compensated staff or fair volunteers; many of our volunteers are science educators and engineers themselves, contributing more than 400 hours of time to plan and stage the fair. Host facilities contribute exhibition space, classrooms, and in-kind services to make the experience a memorable one for students.
Businesses and individuals can support our efforts by sponsoring a state entrant ($175), our ISEF representative ($100-$1,000), an award for one of 22 categories of research, or you can contribute to the fair directly to help us defray our expenses, ($12-15,000/annually). Another way you could help is to be or provide judges the day of the event. We are asking for support from businesses in your area to once again make the fair a successful event for student scientists. They are, after-all our future.
Contributions to sponsor state entrants or awards can be sent to Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota, c/o Debra Martin, treasurer, 700 Terrace Heights, Winona, Minn., 55987. For additional information, you can contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org. Contributions are tax deductible by using the Winona State University Foundation to make your contribution.
The 2017 fair committee and the students thank you for your support.
