As the president of the Minnesota State Senate, and someone that has professed an interest in bi-partisan solutions, Senator Jeremy Miller has an important opportunity in the coming days before the 2019 legislative session ends. I ask that he support the driver’s license for all legislation, and just as importantly, use his leadership influence to urge his fellow senators to support it, as well.
This legislation is backed by a wide and deep coalition of groups, many of whom typically don’t work together. It includes immigrant rights groups, business groups, the Minnesota Catholic Conference, trade unions, the Minnesota Milk Producers, the Land Stewardship Project, and locally, the Winona City Council, Winona County Sheriff Ron Ganrude, and Winona County Attorney Karin Sonneman.
Isn’t it ironic that we all benefit from the contributions of undocumented immigrant workers in our economy — as farm workers, carpenters, landscapers, hotel and restaurant staff — yet since 2002, we’ve been unwilling to let them legally drive a car in our state?
Senator Miller, here’s your chance to do the right thing.
