Two hundred years ago, Samuel Smith penned the words, “My country ’tis of thee sweet land of liberty, to thee we sing. Land where our fathers died; land of the pilgrims’ pride, from every mountainside, let freedom ring. Our fathers’ God to Thee, author of liberty, to Thee we sing. Long may our land be bright, with freedom’s holy light. Protect us by Thy might, great God, out King.”
Again we celebrate the birth of our nation and the freedoms our patriots died to secure and preserve for us. Let us not sacrifice those freedoms on the altar of secular hedonism. Our country was established on Judeo-Christian principles and values. Our freedom and democratic way of life will only be preserved by God’s blessing as we hold those values dear and honor Him.
There is a greater freedom that has been purchased for us by God Himself. It is freedom from bondage to sin and guilt, which Christ died to secure for us. He calls us to repent and receive His love and forgiveness by faith. It’s a gift that cannot be earned, nor is it deserved, but must be received. It’s all wrapped up in Jesus Christ (John 1:12). Do you have this freedom?
