Home and Community Options: Thanks for the magic

Home and Community Options

For over 20 years, Home and Community Options, Inc., has experienced magic through its annual musical. Each year, the magic becomes tangible as a mermaid finds her voice, a car flies, or, as seen this year in “My Fair Lady,” a young woman experiences an extraordinary transformation. The magic, however, is not in the musical itself, but rather in the community that brings the production to life. We at HCO once again offer our sincere thanks to all those who contributed to the success of “My Fair Lady.”

As with each production, the hard work of so many is what brings the magic to life. We are grateful for:

• Cast members, who began sharing their talents with us at rehearsals in April
• Orchestra musicians, who brought the production’s music to life
• Backstage crew, who were tasked with moving a complicated set NUMEROUS times
• Committee members, who developed the vision and made it happen
• Costume volunteers, who patiently worked with each person to find just the right fit
• Set and prop volunteers, who built, painted, and developed the scenery
• Performance volunteers, who served behind the scenes and in the front of the house as vendors, ushers, EMCees, green room support, ice hauling, and in countless other ways
• Hair and make-up volunteers, who made the cast look fabulous
• Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota Page Theatre staff, who provided technical skill and unparalleled hospitality
• Donors, who made donations of goods, services, and financial support
• Audience members, who witnessed the magic and cheered the cast on in the process

More than anything, we at HCO resonate with the show’s key message: not to judge a person by the way they speak. Like Eliza, we know that being given opportunities to succeed can have a profound impact on one’s life. We recognize the value of a community that accepts people of all abilities and welcomes the magic of an integrated society. Our work to provide support and residential services to people with developmental disabilities is not without challenges, but we see the vision of HCO come to life each year uniquely through the musical. For this vision, and the community of Winona that embraces it with time, talents, and treasure, we offer a heartfelt “thank you.”
