Apparently the chronic wasting disease (CWD) controversy at the Prairie Island Deer Park has triggered an outbreak of a malady known as “dumber than a stump” syndrome. The disease seems to have been contracted by several of Winona’s city officials and council members. Their brains appear to have been tricked into believing a theory that has not been scientifically proven to be true. According to some recent news reports, they want to wipe out the existing deer population and close the park. All this on unproven speculation that the deer inhabiting the park will somehow transmit the “Mad Deer” disease to humans and we will have a zombie deer apocalypse! How bizarre! I drive by there several times a week and did not realize I was putting my life in peril. God help the campers just a few yards away! There is, however, some good news for all you stump-affected city officials. (Right now you sound like Chicken Little.) All you have to do is step back and put a little thought into what you are planning to do. Do you really think that every animal park or zoo in the country will take this kind of irrational step at this stage of the game? I doubt it! I hope you have a plan of some sort for the use of the park area if you do shut it down. But it will be difficult to find an attraction that will please more people of all ages than the one already there. You made a major blunder by needlessly killing off the park’s gem, a beautiful little snow-white doe, several years ago. That was a really stupid mistake. Please don’t top it doing the unthinkable. When it’s gone, it’s gone. I would not want all that on my conscience.
P.S. I miss Gerry Krage; he has guts!
