Science and Engineering Fair
Saint Mary’s University will host the 2020 Southeast Minnesota & Western Wisconsin Regional Science and Engineering Fair, an affiliation of the Minnesota State Science & Engineering Fair (MSSEF). MSSEF is an annual competition that showcases Minnesota’s best and brightest students in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). Many of our fair’s participants come from rural Southeast Minnesota where opportunities to present their student research is limited.
This year’s regional fair (the 70th occurrence), will take place in Gostomski Field House on Friday. February 21, 2020. Students from throughout Southeast Minnesota and Western Wisconsin will present their student research in scientific papers and experimental projects from across the scientific spectrum. Approximately 25 students will advance to the State Fair where they will compete for awards totaling $25,000, sponsored by 40 government agencies, corporations, and professional scientific societies. One project from our region will go on to the International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) in Phoenix, Ariz.
Our fair is entirely dependent on support from our local universities, businesses, and individuals. Fair volunteers, many of them science educators and engineers themselves, contribute more than 400 hours of time to plan and stage the fair. Host facilities contribute exhibition space, classrooms, and in-kind services to make the experience a memorable one for students.
Businesses and individuals can support our efforts by sponsoring a state entrant, ($125), our ISEF representative ($100-$1,000), an award for one of 22 categories of research, or you can contribute to the fair directly to help us defray our expenses, ($10-12,000 annually). Another way you could help is to be or provided judges the day of the event. We are asking for support from businesses in our area to once again make the fair a successful event for student scientist. They are, after all, our future.
Contributions to sponsor state entrants or awards can be sent to Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota, c/o Debra Martin, treasurer, 700 Terrace Heights, Winona, Minn. For additional information, you can contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org. Contributions are tax deductible by using the Winona State University Foundation.
The 2020 fair committee and the students thank you for your support.
