Make room on Mt. Rushmore!

From: Fred Orlowske

Move over Presidents Theodore Roosevelt, Abraham Lincoln, George Washington, and Thomas Jefferson. Make room for President Donald J. Trump!

Frankly, all the praise and exaltation last week by Vice President Mike Pence and the Congressional Republicans galled me; I wanted to vomit! What’s next? Do all in his presence have to genuflect? Judging from Trump’s body language alone the viewer could tell he was relishing all the admiration bestowed upon him. These praises were based upon many of the executive orders that President Trump has exuberantly cancelled such as non-acknowledgement of climate change, policy in regards to network neutrality, reduction in the size of national parks; yet he has not endorsement the removal of Confederate statues, civil rights, approval of pipelines that endanger Native American lands, tax reforms that don’t just benefit the rich, diplomacy with our allies and foreign relations with perceived adversaries.

Perhaps President Trump needs to study the philosophies of Mahatma Ghandi and Theodore Roosevelt. According to Ghandi, “A country’s greatness is measured by how it treats its weakest members.” I believe Theodore Roosevelt (Nobel Peace Prize recipient 1906) would be appalled by President Trump’s foreign relation policies. Furthermore, President Roosevelt was a conservator of our nation’s natural resources and looked out for consumer protection by “trust busting” the big corporations and companies that were taking advantage of the public in order to accumulate huge wealth, known as the “square deal.”

It is truly amazing to see the sharp contrast between these three individuals. For me, the direction this country under a Trump presidency gives an empty meaning to the lyrics in the song “My Country ‘Tis of Thee.”
