Setting the record straight

(1/29/2018)

From: Lefty Lee

I participated in four amphibious landings: Guadalcanal, Bougainville, Guam, and Iwo Jima (1942-1945). I received several medals and citations during this time.

I want to set the record straight regarding the article in the Winona Post in 2015 titled, “Uncommon Valor: Three Winona marines at Iwo Jima, 1945.” I was evacuated from Iwo Jima because of battle fatigue (which is now known as PTSD) on February 21, 1945. On February 23, 1945, Hershel “Woody” Williams conducted a successful flame-throwing campaign in which he was later the recipient of the Congressional Medal of Honor. I was not one of the five riflemen providing coverage for Woody as had previously been reported by me.

I apologize to my friends and fellow veterans.
