The gift

From: Philip Sorensen

Christmas is a time for giving, and it has become so commercialized that we almost lose sight of the meaning of the day. Yet, it was God’s gift to the world, his Son, that has inspired this spirit of giving. It was God’s love for a broken, sinful humanity that he gave his Son. Heaven rejoiced, and angels sang, “Glory to God in the highest …”

We are filled with joy when our gifts are opened and received with excitement. But we feel badly if the gift is a disappointment. Shortly after his birth, Herod tried to kill Jesus. He was despised and rejected by his peers, and later crucified. Yet the Apostle John tells us that “as many as received him, putting their trust in him, to them he gave the right to become children of God,” (John 1:12).

Since we are actually celebrating the birth of Christ, have you ever thought about what you can give him? He doesn’t need our money, nor does he want our sacrifices (Hosea 6:6). He wants us! To know him, love him, and live for him is what he longs for from us. Give him the one gift he desires most this Christmas. And Merry Christmas to all.
