Wear orange this weekend to remember gun violence victims

National Gun Violence Awareness Day is the first Friday in June, which will be June 7 (and throughout the weekend) in 2019.

Wear orange is dedicated to honoring the lives of Americans affected by gun violence and elevating the voices of every American who demand an end to gun violence. Join us as we wear orange — a color so loud it can’t be ignored.

Orange is the color that Hadiya Pendleton’s friends wore in her honor when she was shot and killed in Chicago at the age of 15 — just one week after performing with her high school band at President Obama’s second inaugural parade in 2013. She was an honors student, volleyball player and majorette in the band. She and her friends were at a park together when she was shot. The shooter was a member of a gang called SUWU and opened fire on Pendleton and her friends because he thought they were members of a rival gang. Two of her friends were also injured. After her death, her friends asked us all to stand up, speak out, and wear orange to raise awareness about gun violence.

Since then orange has been the defining color of the gun violence prevention movement. Whether it’s worn by students in Montana, activists in Winona, or Hadiya’s loved ones in Chicago, the color orange honors the more than 100 lives cut short and the hundreds more wounded by gun violence every day.
