Happy Birthday to Charolette's Web and Peter Rabbit
Two of the most endearing books in Children's Literature
are celebrating their birthdays. Charolette's Web by E B White
was written 50 years ago. Wilbur, Fern, and even Templeton have
touched our hearts and those of children in Grades 1-3 with their
trip to the fair.
Beatrix Potter introduced us to Peter Rabbit, Mr. McGregor,
Flopsy, Mopsy , Cotton-tail and camomile tea 100 years ago.
Please come down to the library to renew your friendships with
these wonderful books.
COLORING CONTEST
Enter our Summer Reading Program Coloring Contest for ages 1
to 12. Pick up the coloring sheet at the Children's Department
Help Desk. Crayons or magic markers may be used. Each entry
needs to be colored by only the entrant. All entries need to
be turned in by Wednesday, July 24. The names of the winners
will be posted on Wednesday, July 31, in the Children's Department.
One entry per person. A gift is given to each child who returns
a completed entry. At the end of the summer, a prize will be
awarded to each winner in each of the age categories.
Time Out Teams with Winona Public Library!
When you buy books at Time OutCreative Stuff For Kids at
the Winona Mall, they will keep track of your purchases. When
you get to $75 worth of book purchases you get to pick out a
book from their shelves and they will donate it to the Winona
Public Library's Children's Department in dedication to anyone
you wish. A special section at the library has been set up so
that you can come to the library and see your books on the shelves.

been added to the Children's Department collection through this
wonderful partnership.
Summer Reading Program
The 2002 Summer Reading Program's theme is "Discover
A Hoppin' Place @ Your Library". Registration is required
to attend all of the summer reading story times, group activities,
and special events. Registration began on Wednesday, May 15,
for all of the Summer Reading Program Events. Please call 452-4592

Wednesday's Special Events for Children Entering Kindergarten
to Grade Six this fall
Among the special events scheduled are the free performances,
many of which are sponsored by local businesses and organizations
as a benefit to the youth in our community. A special display
is set up in the library that lists this year's sponsors. These
45 -minute events will feature some of your favorite regional
musicians and artists. These performances will take place in
the Art Room at the Winona Public Library. Registration is required.
Seating is limited to 100 persons in Grades K-6. Two performances
will be held on each day. The times will be 10:15-11:00 and
11:30-12:15. The performers will be:
July 3-Jack Pearson: Mr. Song-Strummin' Storyman!
July 10- Jim Jayes, Magician: "Magic World of Books"
July 16-The Zoo Man from the Prairie Winds Zoo-two special evening
performances for families at 6:45 and 7:30 p.m.-sponsored by

Special Family Performances on Tuesday, July 16 by The Zooman
The Children's Department invites families to sign up for
the special family performances by Brent Mielke, The Zooman from
the Prairie Winds Zoo. The program will feature many live animals,
props, and skits. The two 45 minute programs will be from 6:45-7:30
and 7:30-8:15 p.m. on Tuesday, July 16 and are being sponsored
by Motor Parts and Equipment, Inc.
The Dennis Warner Kids Concert
Dennis Warner's Kids Concert will be held at the Winona Public
Library on Wednesday, June 26, at 10:15 and 11:30 a.m. These
45- minute concerts are free and are for children that will be
entering Grades K-6 in the fall.
From small village gatherings in Alaska to huge auditoriums in
Florida, recording artist Dennis Warner has earned a well-deserved
reputation for being an outstanding entertainer for children.
Since 1992, Dennis has become one of the most loved and respected
children's performers available to schools and other community
events.
His many credits include hosting Jammin' with Dennis Warner,
a special live radio show broadcast by National Public Radio
affiliates. Dennis has been featured on numerous regional TV
and radio programs, as well as national broadcasts of NPR's Great
Acoustics, Live! and River City Folk. He has also
been honored with an invitation to perform at the prestigious
Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C.
His special Kids Concert is in constant demand as he brings his
young audience into the spotlight with involvement and participation.
Geared towards children in Grades K-6, his show consists of
songs that the kids know with music from today's country, rock
'n roll and folk. If they don't know it, they quickly learn
it! And with Dennis' acute sense of timing and humor, the show
is kept upbeat and positive.

Jack Pearson Concert at the Library on July 3
Jack Pearson's Kids Concert will be held at the Winona Public
Library on Wednesday, July 3, at 10:15 and 11:30 a.m. These
45-minute concerts are free and are for children that will be
entering Grades K-6 in the fall.
Jack Pearson, award winning Minnesota musician and storyteller,
will be bringing his special blend of songs and stories for kids
here to the Winona Public Library, so mark your calendars! July
3! Jack is well-known around the Upper Midwest and the West
Coast for his vocal and instrumental skills on guitar, banjo,
and fiddle. Your kids may have heard him at school , at camp
or on the radio. Jack will be sharing his trademark songs and
stories and rumor has it that he'll even be playing his almost
famousamplified toybox lid??! The kids in your life won't want
to miss this one!
Jack Pearson, Minnesota musician/storyteller, will be performing
for kids here at the Winona Public Library on July 3. Jack is
well-known in schools, churches and camps in the Upper Midwest
and around the country. His new album for children, "To
All Purple Tree Trunks," won a Parents' Choice Silver Honor.
Those of you who may have heard Jack will remember his engaging
style of music and storytelling, and first-timers are in for
a real treat! His fiddle, banjo, and guitar will have children
all tapping and singing along in no time. Don't let your children
miss this special time of songs, stories and plain old fun!
In addition to performing, Jack's recordings are gaining an ever-widening
audience. His kids' album, "Singin' in Our Own Backyard,"
won a Parents' Choice Gold Award as well, and his latest for
kids, "7 Stories Tall," won a Storytelling World Honor
award. Jack's music can be heard on family-oriented radio stations
around the United States. He has also recorded four albums for
grown-ups.

Jim Jayes Concert on July 10
Jim Jayes' kid's concert will be held at the Winona Public Library
on Wednesday, July 10, at 10:15 and 11:30 a.m. These 45-minute
concerts are free and are for children that will be entering
Grades K-6 in the fall.
In this all new magic program, "The Magic World of Books",
students will learn all about the care and "feeding"
of books, the importance of being a life-long-learner, how a
library is an imagination, information and recreation station,
and even the difference between fiction and non-fiction. This
show is packed with lots of fun, original magic illusions and
puppetry.
For over 30 years, Jim Jayes has been entertaining children of
all ages with his unique combination of Magic and Puppetry.
This Sacramento, California native, who makes all of his own
puppets and props, has performed in almost any situation you
can name, including: schools (preschool to college age groups),
comedy clubs, circuses, fairs, shopping malls, business trade
shows, family parties and libraries. "One reason I perform
in libraries," says Jim, "is to get kids into libraries.
If you don't have kids you won't have library patrons in the
future." The libraries in the surrounding areas also have
benefited from his talents to entertain more than four hundred
people in a single performance.
In 1997, Jim moved to the Austin, Minnesota area where he lives
with his wife Cindy and their two daughters. He is also a designer
and inventor of magic effects, which are currently in the programs
of countless performers around the world.
Stuart Stotts Concert on July 24
Stuart Stott's Kids Concert will be held at the Winona Public
Library on Wednesday, July 24, at 10:15 and 11:30 a.m. These
45-minute concerts are free and are for children that will be
entering Grades K-6 in the fall. These two concerts are being
sponsored by The Merchants Bank.
Award winning singer and storyteller Stuart Stotts will be appearing
in a concert at the Winona Public Library on July 24. The concert
promises to be a fun event for children. Come prepared to sing,
laugh, and maybe even dance.
The concert is part of the summer library reading program, and
is titled "Go for the Gold: Read." Stuart will sing
songs, tell stories and celebrate the joys of reading. There
will be lots of chances to join in for everyone.
Stuart travels throughout the Midwest performing over 250 concerts
a year for schools, nursing homes, festivals and community groups.
He plays guitar, National Steel Guitar, rainstick and water
drum. Stuart is an enchanting storyteller, with a repertoire
of both folktales and personal stories. He is an expert at getting
Stuart Stott's Kids Concert will be held at the Winona Public
Library on audiences involved through singing, movement and laughter.
Stuart is also the author of "World Citizen" and "Music
in my Mother's House", and many other songs which are being
performed by artists around the country. His songs have been
recorded by such artists as Ronnie Gilbert, the Chenille Sisters,
Tom Hunter, Tom Pease and many others.
Stuart has six recordings available for sale: "Good Friends"
with Laurie Neustadt in 1985, "One Big Dance", "I'm
Not Scared" and "Are We There Yet?", tapes for
children and families, and "I Carried the News," for
grownups. His newest recording is "Celebrate" with
Tom Pease, a resource collection of songs for young children
and those who sing with them. He is also the co-author of The
Bookcase Ghost: A Storyteller's Collection of Wisconsin Ghost
Stories available from Midwest Traditions. "One Big Dance,"
was awarded the 1996 Parents' Choice Seal of Approval. Recordings
and books will be available for sale at the concert.

Schiffelly Puppets Concert on July 31
The Schiffelly Puppets Kids Concert will be held at the Winona
Public Library on Wednesday, July 31, at 10:15 and 11:30 a.m.
These 45-minute concerts are free and are for children that
will be entering Grades K-6 in the fall.
Jim Schiffman holds a B.S. in Theatre from Mankato State University
and has performed in over 35 theatrical productions in Minnesota.
Jim is responsible for the creation of original voices and puppet
characters seen in all Schiffelly Productions.
Sue Schiffman holds a B.A. in Preschool and Elementary Education
from Gustavus Adolphous College. She is employed during the
school year with Burnsville School District as a preschool teacher.
She has been working with Schiffelly Puppets for 10 years in
various capacities. And yes, she is married to Jim!!!
Schiffelly Puppets' Entertainment Programs bring the art of puppetry
to community groups and organizations throughout the Upper Midwest.
Comic situations, original puppet characters, and morals are
added to classic fairy tales creating an action-packed entertainment
extravaganza. These humorous and fun-filled shows run approximately
45 minutes and are appropriate for grades K-6.
Schiffelly Puppets has worked with a variety of television and
video producers including: The Walt Disney Company, CBS affiliate
WCCO-TV, Tele-Producers, Video-Link, the Minnesota Office of
Environmental Assistance as well as many other groups and organizations.

Winona Public Library provides training on the use of the new
electronic catalog from 10 to 11 a.m. on Wednesdays and from
7 to 8 p.m. on Thursdays. Space is limited, so call the reference
desk at 452-4860 to sign up for a session. Walk-ins are accepted
as space allows.
The summer hours of the Winona Public Library are in effect
