7:30 pm Tibetan Monks
$22 Adults, $18 Seniors & Students The Monks of Drepung Loseling Monastery in India have been touring North America for over 20 years to support their monastery and to preserve and demonstrate part of their Tibetan cultural traditions. They provide a performance that features multi-phonic singing, wherein the monks simultaneously intone three notes of a chord. They are particularly renowned for this unique singing. They also utilize traditional instruments such as 10-foot long dung-chen horns, drums, bells, cymbals and gyaling trumpets, rich brocade costumes and masked dances, such as the Dance of the Sacred Snow Lion and Dance of the Skeleton Lords. In addition, the monks create sand mandala paintings using colored sands and the traditional chakpur (metal funnel). The monks used to create these mandalas in primarily private, sacred sites. After the Sept. 11, 2001, tragedies, the Dalai Lama, considered the spiritual leader of Tibetan Buddhists, instructed them to craft mandalas in public places as a way to help heal and move beyond. Several lecture and informal conversations opportunities will also be a part of their five day residency.
