2:30 pm Senior University - Music of Coutries and Cultures
Each class will focus in turn on the music of China, Africa, India, and the Carribbean/South America. Following class, we will hear excellent live performances by representative artists from these cultures at the International Music Series Concerts, 6 p.m. in the East Cafeteria of Kryszko Commons on the same Thursdays classes meet. Each class will present background information on the music of the culture featured in that evening’s concert, plus basic understanding of the unique instruments, musical ideas, and cultural context of the music.

7:00 pm Drum Making Retreat
The beat of the drum brings an awareness of the sacred and powerful beat of all of creation. Creating this sacred instrument of peace will help you to hear and feel the rhythms that connect the earth, its diverse peoples, and all creatures. This year, the retreat will also include making a rattle. Drum maker and storyteller Wayne Manthey returns this fall to bring his gift and experience of creating and living with drums. Wayne writes, "The drum symbolizes the heartbeat of life, the heartbeat of the community. It is not simply an art form, but a tool for cleansing, centering, and focusing one's intentions for health and happiness." Starting Friday, September 13 at 7 p.m. through Sunday, September 15 at noon $95 includes retreat and lunch on Saturday. Overnight accommodations are available for $42.00 per night. The one day a year that everyone can enjoy the pancake breakfast, silent auction, live music, pioneer arts and craft demonstrations tour the mill in full operation, kids soft ball, bake sale, full midday meals served, by all means buy raffle tickets to support the mill. See ya there!

10:30 am Semcac Clinic's Get Talkin' 1/2k Walk
The Semcac Clinic is hosting its first-ever “Get Talkin’ 1/2k” walk on September 14th at the Winona State University Gazebo. The purpose of this event is to encourage conversations with the people in your life—family, friends, etc. In our fast-paced, smartphone centered world, it’s easy to lose that personal touch that face-to-face communication provides. There will be volunteers holding up signs along the route with fun conversation starters on them. Entry Fee is $20 (includes long-sleeve shirt; early registration guarantees a shirt). Registration is available online at www.semcac.org. Check-in begins at 10:30am on the day of the event with the walk starting at 11am. All proceeds will go to Semcac Clinic’s education and outreach in Fillmore, Houston, and Winona Counties. All participants will be entered in a raffle to win prizes from local business such as Third Eye Tatu, GQ, DIBS and more! So, grab a friend and make the trek to the Get Talkin’ 1/2 k!


12:00 pm Second Saturdays with Sen. Schmit
State Sen. Matt Schmit will host mobile office hours to visit with residents in his district. Attendees can have individual conversations with Sen. Schmit to share pointed concerns, ask specific questions, or seek constituent service assistance from Sen. Schmit and his office.

For his visit to Winona he will interpret contemporary popular music including the Cocteau Twins, R.E.M. and Pink Floyd.

7:00 pm Catholic Worker Roundtable
From March to May of 2013,  beginning Easter Week, Rosemary Lyons and Jim Lenarz walked across northern Spain on the path they call El Camino de Santiago (The Way of St. James)  This trek is historically a Catholic Pilgrimage originating in the Medieval Age of Europe.   As Pilgrims, they joined thousands of others from every corner of the world, walking one day at a time, one step at a time, with the clothes on their back.  They would love to share their story with you, with a little help from their friends!

The Winona State University Student Health & Wellness Advocate Club is hosting their 3rd annual Family Weekend 5k Run/Walk on September 21st, 2013 at Jaycee Pavilion in Winona, Minnesota. This event is held by Winona State’s wellness-based club as a healthy, fun activity for students and their families to participate in during Family Weekend at WSU. Since this event is held early in the day at the “big lake” near campus, families can enjoy the beautiful scenery of the Winona lakes and get some fresh air and exercise before participating in the remainder of the many other Family Weekend events. The event is a 5k Run/Walk with an entry fee of $20/person. Check-in begins at 8 A.M. with the race starting at 9 A.M. Join us for a FUN family event for all ages.
