February 6th-February 17th
"¢ National School Counseling Week
February 6-10 is National School Counseling Week recognizing the fine work of these individuals who line up testing, assist students with post-secondary plans, facilitate support groups, and counsel students with issues they are facing. In Winona Area Public Schools, our nine counselors tend to the needs of our 4000 students as well as serve some of our private schools. Hats off to elementary counselors Brenda Denisen and Pat Berkley; middle school counselors Lisa Mullen, Mark Godsey, and Linda Skiewarski; and high school counseling staff MaryAnn Dennis, Karen Whitney-Thrune and Terri Bauer. We appreciate the service they provide to our students and families.
"¢ Cognitive Abilities and Basic Skills Test Underway
Children enrolled in Grade 2 will be taking the Cognitive Abilities test during the week of February 6. Basic Skills Tests in Math and Reading will be administered to WMS Eighth Graders and any new students or students needing to test in Grades 9-12 on February 7 (math) and on February 9 (reading). Parents can help by making sure their students are in school that day, prepared with adequate rest, a good breakfast, dressed comfortably, and knowing that the test is important and you trust their abilities to do well.
"¢ 2006 Kindergarten Kick-off
Families with children who will be 5 years old by September 1, 2006 have been mailed an invitation to the Kindergarten Kick-off. The event introduces families to the Winona Area Public Schools, our kindergarten faculty, and some of our outstanding high school students. Participants will have a chance to meet Herky, our mascot and very own "big bird"¯; learn more about the upcoming Round-Up schedule; and take home fun gifts and tools for helping children make the transition to kindergarten.
