Winona Senior High School H.O.P.E. (Helping Our Peers Excel) group will sponsor a Battle of the Bands in the WSHS concourse on March 3, from 9 p.m. to midnight. Doors open at 8 p.m. and admission is $3.
This, the fifth annual Battle, will feature six high school bands from WSHS representing various music genres such as punk, metal, experimental and rock. Competing bands are All Else Fails, Captain Trips, Hadoken!, Haven, Lost Cause, and Tatdsm. Discount Lion Safari and the returning Winona Senior High School staff band, Old Skool, will warm up the crowd as featured house bands. Among the prizes donated by local businesses are gift certificates from Hardt's Music, Quali-Tee Screen Printing, and trophies from First Place Trophies.
This year's Battle features the third annual Logo Contest. Senior Danielle Gerry's guitar-inspired artwork was chosen from over 30 student entries to be used for event publicity. Gerry worked with graphic designer Joe McCormick of Mediaworks to refine her design for use on T-shirts, posters and backstage passes. T-shirts will be on sale at the event for $7.
The Battle of the Bands provides a chance for students to participate in all aspects of event planning and is a showcase for local teen's musical talents. The event also creates many opportunities for positive youth-adult partnerships. AmeriCorps members are again teaming up with students in H.O.P.E. to host the event. Other community volunteers include WSU's Tau Kappa Epsilon and Counselor Education students (Chi Sigma Iota), Stingray Stage Lighting, members of the band Paco and numerous parent volunteers.
For more information about the event, please contact Sarah Johnson, Volunteer Event Coordinator at imalifeliver@yahoo.com, or Mary Dennis, Counselor at 507-494-1517.
