Elder Network Volunteers touch the lives of elderly couple (02/23/2006)
Alfred and Elaine have been married for almost 37 years. They enjoyed fishing together, visiting Alfred's parents in Arcadia, and playing with their dog Buddy. However, about 5 years ago, Alfred noticed that Elaine was having difficulty performing some of her routine tasks. As time went on, she was able to do less and less on her own. Medical testing precluded Alzheimer disease but she was suffering from serious dementia. It fell on Alfred to provide full time care for Elaine and maintain the household. He was soon overwhelmed with all this responsibility and had no time from himself.

Their daughter Debbie became aware of an organization called "Elder-Network" which provided peer counseling and respite services to the elderly. Debbie contacted the organization, explained the situation and volunteer, Robin, and was selected to visit Alfred and Elaine. She visited every other week giving Alfred time to relax, pursue his own interests, and not feel that he was neglecting Elaine. Alfred feels he could not have continued his care of Elaine without the help of Robin.

Elder Network is a non-profit organization providing peer counseling and respite services. The seven-week training session will begin on March 8 from 1:30-4:00 p.m. on the 12th floor of Valley View Tower, 165 East 4th Street. There is no age requirement for those signing up for Respite Care Giver training, however, those taking Peer Counseling training must be 55 years or older. Please contact Stephanie at 507-452-0580 to register.
