The University of Minnesota Extension Service is teaming up with a variety of speakers, sponsors, and organizations to provide an educational workshop on Saturday, March 4th at the St. Charles Community Center, 830 Whitewater Avenue, for meat goat producers. This workshop will provide a day of educational topics for anyone considering meat goats as a possible business, and for those who are experienced producers. 4-H and FFA project leaders and members are also encouraged to attend.
Topics will include; Preventive Health Strategies; Nutrition, Feed and Ration Balancing; Economics of the Meat Goat Industry; Pasture Management; Meat Goat Breeds, Breeding Strategy and 4-H Market Goat Management. In addition, a panel of local meat goat producers will present information on their private operations and will be available for a question and answer session.
Speakers include Dr. Cynthia Wolf, DVM, University of Minnesota; Dr. Bill Head, University of Minnesota Animal Science Department; Chris Morton, Minnesota Food Association; Wayne Martin, Minnesota Institute of Sustainable Agriculture; Howard Moechnig, USDA State Grazing Specialist; and Joel Fredrich, goat breeder.
The workshops run from 9:00 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. The cost for each program is $20.00 and includes a proceedings manual and lunch. Each additional family member may attend for $10.00 without receiving a manual. Pre-registration is encouraged to help with meal planning and material preparation. Same day registrations are accepted for an additional $5 fee.
