Members of the Winona Area Public Schools Foundation presented a check in support of "A Celebration of Writing: A Young Authors' Conference" hosted by the Hiawatha Valley Education District.
The Conference, which originated in 1995, will again be held this year on the Winona State University campus on May 11 and 12, 2006. Approximately 1,000 students in grades 3-8 will attend. Students from the Winona public, private and charter schools in addition to sixteen surrounding school districts participate in this two-day event. Students will have an opportunity to learn about writing from published authors, illustrators and other communicators. The goal is to enable students to expand their creative horizons and improve their own writing abilities. The presenters will share secrets of their professions and gain an appreciation of young people's creative processes. The schools benefit from being able to expose students to a variety of professional communicators and from the residual enthusiasm that the students bring back to the classroom.
The Winona Area Public Schools Foundation is an independent legal entity that exists to provide ongoing support for many opportunities that benefit District 861 students. The Foundation regularly grants monies to support field trips, special projects, guest speakers, guest artists and many other student enrichment opportunities.
