Students at Blair-Taylor Elementary have been collecting pop tabs since October 2004 and if they collect as many tabs on March 15th as they did on Feb. 15th, they will meet their goal of collecting a million tabs.
The class competition winners for the Feb. 15 collection were: 1st Mr. Andy Nehring's 4th grade with 13312 tabs, 2nd Mrs. Katie Danzinger with 11392 and 3rd place Mrs. Stephanie Schmidt's 5th grade with 7552.
A huge boost to the collection came from Cheyenne Werlein, pictured here with some of her classmates, from Ms. Hodson's 2nd Grade. Her great uncle, the late Stanley Blazek had collected and strung together the old fashioned pull pop tabs for years. When Cheyennes's mother, Sue Werlein, suggested that Cheyenne's grandfather, Tony Blazek, donate them to the Blair-Taylor Elementary Cheyenne was able to donate 16, 384 tabs to Ms. Hodson's 2nd grade classroom collection.
Standings for the overall classroom competition for the year so far are as follows: 1st place Ms. Jill Anderson's 3rd grade with 30780, 2nd place Mr. Andy Nehring's 4th grade with 30209 and 3rd place Ms. Donna Hodson's 2nd grade with 26971 tabs. In February 70619 tabs were collected. If that same amount is collected on March 15th (about 4, 000 tabs or 4 Ragu jars full for each class), their target final collection date, they will meet their goal of collecting a million pop tabs! After reaching this goal, they will discontinue collecting tabs at Blair-Taylor Elementary and will be donating the tabs to Ronald McDonald Charities. If you have tabs for their collection please get them to the Blair-Taylor Elementary before March 15. If you need tabs to be picked up please contact Ms. Barth or Ms. Marsh at 608-989-9835.
