Camp We-No-Wheeze, a recreational and educational camping opportunity for children ages 7-13 who suffer from asthma, is scheduled for July 21-23, 2006. Camp We-No-Wheeze, now in its 22nd year, will be held at Eagle Bluff Environmental Learning Center near Lanesboro, Minnesota. Sponsors of this year's event include Winona Health and the American Lung Association.
"At Camp We-No-Wheeze, campers will learn how they can take better care of themselves through asthma education while also enjoying traditional camping fun," stated Gary Haggerty, camp program director. Haggerty also is a member of Winona Health's respiratory care staff.
One of the primary benefits of Camp We-No-Wheeze, according to Haggerty, "Children learn that they are not alone with their asthma-they have peers who are dealing with the same challenges. "
Camp activities include arts and crafts, scavenger hunts and rock climbing. "We place an emphasis on managing asthma while staying active-and Camp We-No-Wheeze also features great food," noted Haggerty.
Parents can feel comfortable sending their children to camp, because medical supervision is provided 24 hours a day by a primary care physician, respiratory care practitioners, registered nurses and counselors trained to care for children with asthma.
Any child ages 7-13 who has seasonal, moderate, or even severe asthma may participate. Space is limited for this special camping experience. The cost is $45.
