The Winona Cotter Ramblers' diamond sports teams "” girls' softball and boys' baseball "” have recently wrapped up incredible seasons which resulted in two trips to the state tournament and one triumphant state championship.
The Lady Ramblers softball team overtook Saint Anthony Village and Maple River in the opening rounds of the tournament, and blanked Watertown-Mayer in the title game on Friday, June 9, in North Mankato.
The championship is the second in four years for the Lady Ramblers, who also claimed state glory in 2003.
The boys' baseball team capped a stellar season this week in the state tournament in St. Cloud.
After knocking off Pipestone Area in the quarterfinals, the boys fell to Saint Anthony Village 7-4 in the semifinals. The Ramblers met Maple River in the third place game after the Winona Post press deadline on Friday, June 16.
The boys' visit to the state tournament came after sectional final letdowns in football and basketball this school year. The girls' championship helped ease the ache of the basketball squad's tough loss in the state tournament earlier in 2006.
For most high school athletes, reaching the state tournament itself is a far-off dream. Cotter's young stars have lived that dream and then some. Congratulations, Ramblers!
