Hal Leonard Corporation establishes Scholarship Fund in memory of founders (07/16/2006)

Company's Gift Benefits Music Students at Founders' Alma Mater, Winona State University

On June 13th, Hal Leonard Corporation regretfully announced the death of the last company co-founder, Roger H. Busdicker, who served as president and vice chairman. He and brothers Harold "Hal" and Everett "Leonard" Edstrom started the Hal Leonard Publishing Corporation in 1947. To commemorate these visionary men who turned their skill for arranging popular songs for bands into the world's largest and most innovative print music publisher, their company has established the new Hal Leonard Scholarship Fund in Memory of Harold Edstrom, Ev Edstrom, Roger Busdicker and Their Families at Winona State University (WSU) in Minnesota, where all three men attended college.

This new fund expands upon a scholarship fund for music students that was established by Hal Leonard Corporation in 1996 to commemorate the passing of the first founder, Harold Edstrom. Each recipient of the Hal Leonard scholarship must be enrolled full time at WSU, maintain a grade point average of 3.0, and have declared a major in WSU's Music Program, with an emphasis on instrumental music. The selection of the recipient is made each February by the WSU Music Department Scholarship Committee, and the awards are renewable for a total of eight semesters. To date, nearly three dozen students have benefited from Hal Leonard Corporations gifts.

Comments Hal Leonard Chairman and CEO Keith Mardak, "Funding this scholarship is a fitting tribute to Harold, Ev and Roger, not only in recognition of their achievements in the music industry, but also for their love of Winona. We feel very proud to help guide new generations of talented students down the path to success in music."

The Edstrom and Busdicker families have requested that any donations to the scholarship fund be made as follows:

Please send checks made payable to WSU Foundation to:

WSU Foundation

ATTN: Catherine Sieracki

P.O. Box 5838

Winona, MN 55987

Include a note that the tax-deductible donation is for the Hal Leonard Scholarship Fund in Memory of Harold Edstrom, Ev Edstrom, Roger Busdicker and Their Families.
