Deer camp isn't the only place to hear about whitetails this year. Deer hunting, along tips on tactics, habitat and safety is the subject of a new podcast, now available on the Department of Natural Resources' Web site. Podcasts are similar to a radio show only instead of tuning into the radio, they're downloaded from the DNR Web site and transferred to a player like an Apple Ipod, Dell DJ or Creative Zen.
"A popular sport such as deer hunting seemed like a natural subject for a DNR podcast," said Steve Carroll, DNR information officer who hosts the podcasts. "By putting deer hunting information in an easy-to-access format on the Web, we hope to encourage deer hunting and help hunters be successful and safe while they hunt." "Deer Hunting Tips" features a 30-minute interview with Enforcement Operations Manager Maj. Al Heidebrink and Lou Cornicelli, DNR big game program coordinator. Topics covered include deer management, safety and the tradition of hunting in Minnesota.
"We were lucky to get Al and Lou to help us with this project," said Carroll. "They're both active hunters and gifted speakers. Their experiences in the field will help hunters get the most out of their deer hunts."
People don't even need an MP3 player to hear the show. Only a computer, Internet access and audio software that will play MP3 files are needed to hear the podcast. The deer hunting tips podcast is available on the DNR Web site by going to www.dnr.state.mn.us and then clicking on "newsroom" from the menu and selecting "podcast."
