Winona State University Spring 2007 Commencement takes place Friday, May 4, in McCown Gymnasium on the Winona campus. More than 880 graduates are scheduled to participate in the ceremonies.
The morning ceremony begins at 9:30 a.m. and includes the College of Business and the College of Liberal Arts. The afternoon ceremony begins at 2 p.m. and includes the College of Education, the College of Nursing & Health Sciences, and the College of Science & Engineering.
A reception is held on the south lawn of Memorial Hall immediately following each ceremony.
The guest speaker for Spring 2007 Commencement is Dr. Eric Jolly, president of the Minnesota Science museum.
Jolly is known for his contributions to mathematics and science education. He was the founding partner to the national "Collaboration for Equity" project, and co-director of "Access by Design," a technology project of the National Science Foundation. In 1994 he founded the National Institute of Affirmative Action. Jolly has published many scholarly articles and lectured throughout the world. In addition, he authored numerous books, articles and curricula for students and teachers across the educational spectrum. Jolly earned his Ph.D. in psychology from the University of Oklahoma. His undergraduate studies were physics and psychology.
The comments of a graduating student are also featured as part of Winona State's Commencement. This is an opportunity to hear a student's perspective on this significant occasion.
For Spring 2007 Commencement, the student speakers are Ryan Flynn and Paul Warzecha. Flynn, from Woodbury, Minn., graduates with a Bachelor of Arts degree in international relations. Flynn speaks during the morning ceremony. Warzecha, from Cambridge, Minn., graduates with a Bachelor of Science degree in elementary education. Warzecha speaks during the afternoon ceremony.
