For any who have loved someone profoundly in both depth and breadth, the following concept should be clear. It should be well understood through experience. For those who have not as yet loved someone where one's health is threatened upon losing the presence of that love, they can still understand the point well enough.
The intense true love that humans are capable of possessing is a window through which we can see God. To those who know, remember the love lost and with it the unrelenting pain and anguish. There was no escape. There was a desperate and hopeless sensation where the torment seemed to have no end. It may take years to assuage and will change what remains.
God created each human in that sort of love. He is in love with each one of His created beings - human or celestial. Our most concentrated and passionate love for another is imperceptible when compared to His love for that person. Just as you have patience and forgive, God has those qualities multiplied infinitely. As close as we can come to unconditional love, God accomplishes that ultimate in selfless love.
It is often taught that God will reject those that He loves if His love is unrequited. In that case, multiply His pain by infinity. How can we think the pain felt by us toward a lost love would not similarly affect God? Since He has both the power and the will, why would He lose that love instead of winning it and enjoying it for all eternity?
The just God we have will bring all He loves to Himself. Most are currently created as vessels of dishonor and will serve a great purpose in God's plan. However, in the end, God will justify the sin and suffering He has brought upon this earth. He will show all who never understood that the painful experiences in this brief existence were a necessary part in His display of grace toward all humans. This is the stage that the universe is watching. When all humans are justified and glorified by grace alone, then all creation will know the Almighty to be just, merciful and trustworthy.
