WSHS Orchestra cellist Jenny Schmidt was chosen by orchestra members to receive this year's National School Orchestra Award, an award which is given annually in each high school orchestra across the country to the senior who most embodies the spirit of the orchestra. Jenny has participated in Minnesota Music Listening Contest, in quartets and small ensembles within the orchestra, and was also chosen for Big 9 Select Orchestra, according to WSHS Orchestra Director Cindy Johnson.
Tony Pham was this year's recipient of the CodaBow award, given by CodaBow International, the Winona company that makes and sells fine instrument bows used around the world. According to Jeff Van Fossen, one of the founders of CodaBow and the originator of the award, it is given with the hope that, "playing of this CodaBow should always be a reminder of the community that cared and the classmates who shared their passion for string playing." This recipient is chosen by orchestra peers as the person who embodies the inspiration, joy, and personal growth that string playing can provide. Tony is shown with Nathan Davies admiring his new bow; Tony was Nathan's mentor in the orchestra's new mentor program in which a WSHS Orchestra member works with a fifth grade orchestra student.
