Local SHRM chapter gathering September 28 (09/23/2007)
The Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) began in Winona under the name of Winona Area Personnel Management Association on October 17, 1972. They are the second oldest chapter in the state of Minnesota. On September 28, 2007 the local chapter of SHRM will gather to celebrate 35 years of service to Winona businesses and employees.

The membership at that time was made up mostly of male professionals. Robert Norton, a charter member of the organization, gave the anniversary committee some insights to the first meetings. They meet in the evening with a meal at many of the fine restaurants in Winona. There was a summer picnic usually held at Holzinger Lodge or a cruise on the Jolly Ollie with the spouses invited as guests.

The first wage and benefit survey was done under the direction of an organization member. Curt Mihm, Peerless Chain HR department, recalled how he went from business to business to interview personnel managers and gather the data. Today the Winona Chapter of SHRM conducts surveys electronically.

At present the membership consists mostly of women professionals and they meet over lunch. The social event of the year is a Holiday Party in December with a Silent Auction to benefit the National SHRM Foundation.

Meetings since the beginning have centered on presentations and discussion about topics or issues currently affecting personnel or human resource management.

The September meeting of SHRM was a roundtable discussion on the flooding in SE Minnesota and what businesses have done to support employees directly affected by the flooding, how well emergency polices worked in this current situation, how individual businesses handled letting other employees leave for clean up and covering the work schedules of those employees affected, some employees still not able to go back into their homes and some not having to job to go to.

The local chapter of SHRM started a student chapter at WSU. Pamela Wolfmeyer, Professor of Management, serves as student advisor.

The celebration will be held at Bub's Lower Level from 4:00 - 7:00 pm. All current and past members are welcome. If you did not get an invitation, please contact Stacy at 507-452-5555 or Susan at 507-689-2281.
