Bake-Em and Bring-Em baking contest (09/26/2007)
Watkins, Hy-Vee, and the Winona Post will host a baking contest Saturday, October 13, 11am until 2pm at the Hy-Vee parking lot. "We have been passionate about baking for over 139 years, and we want to recognize the talented home bakers of our community," says J.R.. Rigley, V.P. of Sales and Marketing at Watkins. "Let's bring on the bragging rights as Winona's ultimate baker!"

Amateur bakers of all ages from the community are invited to enter their favorite baked goods recipes using Watkins products in three categories: pies, cakes, and cookies/bars. Recipes must use at least three Watkins products. Bakers will vie for gift certificates and prizes, and of course bragging rights as Winona's ultimate baker.

"We're looking forward to a little friendly competition with the community. There's a lot of pride in the care and preparation people put into their baking, whether it's a brand new creation or a family tradition passed through the generations. And good food is always a fun way to bring people together," says Rigley.

Contest entry forms may be found at Hy-Vee and in the Winona Post newspaper. Completed registration forms should be put in drop boxes at Hy-Vee or at the Watkins Museum and Store by October 3rd. The top 25 recipes in each category will be selected, and those entrants will be contacted by Watkins and invited to "Bake-em" and "Bring-em" to the judging event. "We have a terrific line-up of judges from Winona. It will be a lot of fun," says Rigley. Three winners will be selected from each category. Prizes will be awarded as $100, $75, and $50 gift certificates to the first, second, and third place winners. Entrants may not be employees of Watkins, Incorporated, Hy-Vee, the Winona Post or their relatives .

Watkins, Hy-Vee, and the Winona Post will also sponsor a coloring contest for area elementary schools, third grade and under. Entries were provided to Winona elementary schools and are also available at the Hy-Vee service counter. Entries must be turned in by October 13th. The winner will receive a special gift bag and a limo ride for the entire class to come to Hy-Vee for a free lunch.

This is the first recipe contest event shared by the three Winona companies.

Free samples will be given out during the event. Hot dogs and pop will be available for sale.
