Two of Winona Health's Community Memorial Hospital Family Birth Center nurses, Lori Vietor, RN, IBCLC, RLC, and Robyn Hinz, LPN, IBCLC, RLC, have achieved certification as International Board Certified Lactation Consultants (IBCLC).
In addition to passing an international board exam, earning this certification required continuing education and thousands of hours working with breastfeeding mothers.
IBCLCs are healthcare professionals who demonstrate through a rigorous exam that they possess skills and knowledge to assist mothers and babies with complex breastfeeding issues.
Vietor and Hinz are specially qualified to offer assistance for a variety of potentially challenging breastfeeding situations including:
~ Prenatal breastfeeding assessment and counseling
~ Positioning and latch of an infant
~ Increasing or decreasing milk production
~ Breastfeeding when a child gains weight slowly
~ Premature babies
~ Breastfeeding infants with neurological deficits or physical disabilities
~ Separation of the mother and baby due to work or education schedules
Lactation consultants are available for inpatient visits, outpatient consults and phone consults. A lactation staff member is also present at Winona Health's weekly support group for breastfeeding mothers and their babies. Moms can weigh their babies, get tips and advice, and share their experiences with other moms. The MOM (Mother's Own Milk) group meets every Wednesday from 1:30-3 p.m. in the Women's Resource Library on the third floor of the clinic at 859 Mankato Avenue.
