As we begin the new school year we have an opportunity to set many goals that will help us improve your area public schools. Since October 2007 parents, staff, faculty, business/community leaders and school board members in the Winona Area Public Schools have been meeting to develop a Comprehensive Plan that includes a current vision and mission statement, a set of core values and strategic initiatives for District #861. This process was facilitated by Diane Amundson of Express Business Solutions, a Winona consulting business. The plan is designed to help guide the district’s decisions and actions for the next several years.
A vision statement is something that is stimulating and causes us to stretch our abilities.
We are a community that inspires all students to be lifelong learners who strive to fulfill their unique potential and improve our society.
A mission statement becomes the “marching orders” or way that we begin to reach our vision.
To empower students of all ages to be lifelong learners who demonstrate creative thinking, critical analysis and problem solving skills in an ever changing and challenging world.
Core values are deep held beliefs that will help act like a “rudder on a ship” and guide the district in its decisions and use of resources. In all that we do we are committed to these values.
WAPS Core Values:
Learner Needs – focusing on the needs of the learner and acknowledging all learners deserve equitable access to resources for a quality education.
Safety – creating an emotionally and physically safe and welcoming learning environment for all students and staff.
Trust – communicating openly and honestly and acting compassionately.
Positive Relationships – honoring relationships with all stakeholders by respecting our community’s heritage and diversity while embracing change.
Financial stewardship – being financially responsible and maintaining a solvent school district
Diversity – provide and emphasize programming that cultivates and inclusive school climate and curriculum.
During an August 7th, 2008, public meeting the district administrative staff (Curriculum Director, Elementary Principals, WMS/WSHS Principals, Fiscal Affairs Director, Special Education Director, Community Education Director, Information Systems Director, Human Resources Director, Buildings & Grounds Director, Academic Affairs Director and Activities Director) shared a clear and concise explanation of their annual goals with the Board of Education and the Winona community. The goals set for the district are linked directly to the newly adopted Comprehensive Plan and use the SMART format that are: Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic and Timely. Administrators also addressed the call to embrace more parent involvement and shared their strategies to reach out to a more diverse population within the Winona Area Public Schools. Some of the goals emphasize our wish to achieve beyond academics and address growing social and cultural needs within our community.
The Winona Area Public Schools are committed to provide students with the best possible public education with the dollars available. Although some of these goals will be difficult to obtain the renewed focus will definitely benefit all stakeholders. We feel the district-wide comprehensive plan and annual goal setting process is a systematic, inclusive, comprehensive and transparent way to best achieve our district vision and mission.
