Join Mississippi Valley Conservancy (MVC) and Winona State University (WSU) in celebrating a new partnership to provide curricular, research, and community service opportunities for students on Mississippi Valley Conservancy nature preserves. The celebration will be in the form of a public nature hike, held at 11:00 am on Tuesday October 20th. Attendees can bring a sack lunch and hike up to the overlook to eat. The hike will be followed by a work day from 1:00 until 4:00 pm to remove invasive honeysuckle.
The catalyst for the partnership was the recent donation of a 20-acre Mississippi River bluff made by a Winona resident, Mr. Stan Ledebuhr. The property is MVC’s first Buffalo County nature preserve, and is located less than 3 miles from the Winona campus.
The site will provide students with a permanent outdoor classroom to conduct biological research, land management and restoration, species inventories, experience nature through photography and creative writing, and develop events and publications specific to the site.
MVC hopes to restore the integrity of the site by removing invasive honeysuckle, and restore the native prairies and cliffs by removing cedar trees. The sandstone cliffs of the site were historically a nesting site for the State Endangered Peregrine Falcon, and the return of the falcon to the cliffs will be the ultimate measure of restoration success.
Please join us for this exciting fall adventure. Wear long pants and good hiking boots. MVC will mark the trail with orange and black flags, so if you get there late, you can catch up from the parking area. How to get there: from the intersection of Hwy 43 and Hwy 35, travel north on 35 for 1.05 miles and make a right onto Old 35. Park along the road & look for the MVC banner.
