Art Walk Dec. 5, 6 (11/29/2009)
The 9th annual Christmas Art Walk will be held 10am – 5pm, Saturday, Dec. 5th and 11am – 4pm, Sunday, Dec. 6th. Here’s a chance to support the local economy by supporting regional artists who make glass, jewelry, paintings, ceramics, carvings, wood, textiles, photography, baskets, Christmas ornaments and more.

Julia Crozier’s Blue Heron Gallery and Studio, 168 E 3rd St., opened in November 2007 and now represents 20 regional artists. In addition to Julia’s exciting new contemporary work, the gallery displays pastels, oil paintings, drawings, etchings, linoleum block prints, sculpture, fine silver jewelry, pottery and glass. Julia carries several local artists’ work including Linda Sue Eastman’s leather purses, Jack Honeywell’s stained glass, Lynette Power’s bronzes, Andrew Chulyk’s decorative boxes, and Dirk Nelson’s miniature bronzes.

Bernadette Mahfood will be showing decorative glass tiles as well as her exquisite glass bead and fiber jewelry at Hotflash Designs in her new studio at 310 E. 10th St. Bernadette’s latest works are glass and fiber “pictures” inspired by her female ancestors, as well as fun new earring designs. Watch her make a glass bead in the flame of a torch. And Walken Ratajczyk will have his latest kilnformed glass work available for sale.

Halvorson Art Studio, 315 E. 4th St is new to the art walk this year. Barb Halvorson will be showing her original wildlife and landscape oil paintings and her projects from her fourth book, to be published early next year. Look for the wolf door.

Magnolias gift shop, 177 Lafayette St., is a ‘must see’ now representing 15 area artists. These include Sally

Mogren’s baskets and quilted runners, Mary Eischen’s quilted wall hangings, Penny Kropidlowski’s handmade soaps, Sandy Erdman’s colorful aprons, Cliff Kjos’s local photography, Lynette Power’s ceramics, Penelope Frederickson’s hobo bags from recycled tablecloths and Kathie Mayo’s felted wool purses. Christmas ornaments, Polish pottery, Winona mittens, photography, metal décor, stoneware, baskets, and textiles are among the many other items you will find at Magnolias.

The Minnesota Marine Art Museum will again be a part of the Art Walk this year. Visitors can enjoy four exhibits and accompanying family-oriented education activities. Currently on display are exhibits titled “Home for the Holidays”, “Famous Names and Places”, “Betsy Bowen Woodcuts” and “Impressionism and the Hudson River School Artists”. On Saturday from 11am to 2pm, folk artists Leo and Marilyn Smith will be signing reproductions, available for purchase in the Museum gift shop. Also for sale in the gift shop you will find Howard Tomashek’s metal sculptures and Touchstone glass paperweights by Cathy and Colin Richardson.

Mary Singer will have her studio at 125 N. Baker St. open this year. She works in oil, watercolor and pencil. Her new lines include miniature paintings, prints and Mississippi scenes of the river flora and fauna. Caricatures are also available and formal portraits of people or animals that truly capture their spirit.  Mary works from life and photos in a step by step process in order to achieve an accurate likeness.

Again this year The Village House Inn, directly across from St. Mary’s U, will host a group of artists:

Roger Meyer, beautifully turned wooden bowls; Andrew Westreich, functional and decorative glass; Mary Solberg, bold, iconic figurative painting; Rebecca Solberg, fabric covered boxes; Diane Armani, ornaments; and Great River Shakespeare Festival, gift certificates. Maryann Frietsche’s Coconut Gal Designs, in the Winona Mall, will join the Art Walk this year. Maryann uses semiprecious gemstones, shell, bone, horn, cultured freshwater pearls and sterling silver in her original jewelry designs.

SATURDAY ONLY the Winona Arts Center hosts the annual Artists Holiday Sale at 228 East 5th Street, December 5, 2009 from 9:00 am - 5:00 pm.

No need to drive around town on Saturday let Clarence Russell take you on the Trester Trolley from place to place. He will be making the rounds of the galleries and studios plus the Winona Art Center all day Saturday. Start at the Blue Heron Gallery and leave the driving to Clarence. Go green for only $11 or $9 in advance at the galleries and studios.

SUNDAY ONLY the Christenson’s home at the corner of Broadway and Harriet will be open 11am - 4pm featuring Kathy Greden’s wonderful photography and Martye Allen’s beautiful pottery. Kathy has used her own photos of Winona subjects and old family photos to create several series of note cards. Images range from the architectural to the ridiculous. Martye uses both sgraffito and wax-resist techniques on her porcelain and stoneware pottery.

Don’t miss these excellent displays of truly original one-of-a-kind gifts, and remember support the local economy by supporting local artists. You will be amazed and entertained by this annual seasonal ‘Walk’ of Art.
