Winona City Council member Debbie White announced Friday she will run for state office, seeking the DFL nomination for the Minnesota House District 31A seat currently occupied by Rep. Gene Pelowski (DFL).
“We can no longer afford to ignore the needs of the people of our district -- it is time for new leadership,” she said. “I have been honored to serve the people of Winona as their at-large City Council member, and will work hard to earn their trust as their representative in St. Paul.”
White has served as an at-large council member since 2004. She currently serves on the Board of Directors for the Coalition of Greater Minnesota Cities and as co-chair of the Transportation Committee. She has also been a board member of the Winona Area Chamber of Commerce and has held the vice president seat of the Southeastern Minnesota League of Municipalities.
Pelowski, who is serving his 12th term in the Minnesota House seat White is vying for, said Friday that he hasn’t yet made any announcement about whether he will run again. He said he usually works under the assumption that he will run again, but doesn’t begin dabbling in campaign issues until the legislative session is over.
