Good Friday: ‘It is Finished’ (04/17/2011)
From: T.M. Schoewe

Coming on the 22nd of April is a reminder that there was a day so terrible that the sun refused to shine at high noon. Its creator was dying! In darkness He prayed “My God, why hast Thou forsaken Me?” “I thirst!” And as the sun came out, about three o’clock, shining on the cross, the words went back to heaven, “It is finished.” What was finished??? The greatest thought, the greatest word, and the greatest deed were finished.

What is the greatest thought? Dare we ask God? Well, it is written “we are called in Christ Jesus before the foundations of the world.” Before this spinning globe in space with mountains and mankind or even angels were, man was called in the greatest of names, that of Christ Jesus.

And what is the greatest word? You know it is in that book in which we hear many times, “and God said...”,. “.. and it was so!” That Word also said it would become flesh and that “He would be wounded for our transgressions.” There are many many great words about the Word including that He is coming again and will judge the living and the dead. But the greatest is the word that “He was wounded for our transgressions.” Now that word is finished.

And finally, how did He finish the greatest thought and word? By finishing His greatest deed, which was ending the battle over sin, death and hell. This deed was done by the Great Word! So as the sun came back on the cross He said, “it is finished!” And it is our hope that now you know why and truly can say for yourself, “It is Good Friday!”
