Perrot State Park events (06/26/2011)
Saturday, June 25

10:00am: Slugs are Slimy

Beginning with the delightful book, Slugs, we will explore the world of decomposers! Bugboxes will be available for everyone to use during the program (free) or to buy and keep forever ($2).

2:00pm: Tremendous Trees

Where would we be without trees? For all our dependency on trees, most of us have a hard time identifying them. Join Andrea for a beginners tree hike and learn to identify at least 3 trees by their bark!

4:00pm-5:30pm: Natural Building – Drop In

Stop by the Nature Center and experiment with natural building materials. Bricks and mortar have their place, but branches and tree blocks can be a lot of fun!

7:00pm: Cast Away

Everyone is invited to come to the Nature Center to learn the art of casting. We will begin by learning to tie a basic knot and then proceed outside to practice our casting. All ages and experience levels are welcome!

Saturday, July 2

9:30am: Brady’s Summer Bootie Buster

Join Andrea for a mid-summer hike to Brady’s Bluff! We will depart from the Nature Center, head to and up West Brady’s, down North Brady’s, and return to the Nature Center for a nice 2 ˝ mile hike through the park. Water is a must, snacks are welcome and cameras are recommended. This is a strenuous hike!

2:00pm: BugBox Safari

Join Andrea for an insect hunt using her favorite tool, the BugBox! All ages are welcome. BugBoxes will be available for everyone to use (free) or to buy and keep forever ($2).

4:30pm: EcoScavenger Hunt

Stop by between 4:30pm and 5:30pm and test your powers of observation! Find enough objects and receive a cool tattoo!

7:00pm: Life of an 18th Century Soldier

Stop by the Encampment and meet two eighteenth-century French marines. Learn about this tough lifestyle and some of their early weaponry.

Sunday, July 3

10:00am: Swooper Swallows

Join Andrea for an exploration of birds! We will make swallow mouths and head out to find bird food near the Nature Center.

2:00pm: Grazing through the Park

Perrot State Park is filled with edible delights! Come learn a bit about wild edibles in the park and sample the fruits of our labor (if we are lucky!).

4:30pm: Natural Building

Stop by between 4:30pm and 5:30pm and take a few minutes to experiment with natural building materials. Bricks and mortar can be useful, but sticks and branches are a lot more fun!

10:00pm: Mike’s Night Sky

Weather permitting, join Mike in the middle of the prairie near the Encampment for a look at the night sky through a telescope!

Monday, July 4

10:00am: Which Bill is Best?

Stop by between 10am and 11am and do a bit of scientific exploration before you head out for the day. Learn a bit about specialized bird bills and the foods they collect!
