It is understandable why Pope Benedict would order all his bishops to oppose gay civil marriage.
After all, he is the one who continues to teach gay kids to reject the love they experience as disordered - meaning ordered toward evil.
As love between gay persons becomes increasingly more visible, accepted, and legitimized, Pope Benedict’s infallibility becomes increasingly rejected and delegitimized.
He has a lot to lose.
Of course, papal moral infallibility has already been quietly rejected in the bedrooms over birth control and condom use. But when the pope tries to get Vatican homophobia written into the Minnesota Constitution - as he did in Wisconsin - he is challenging the fundamental American self-evident truth that all persons are created equal.
Withholding civil marriage from gay people is a civil rights issue, so if Catholics want to reject papal homophobia it isn’t going to be as easy to do it quietly.
For Catholics, silence means tacit approval of Pope Benedict’s self-hate theology for gay people.
It is encouraging to see that Minnesota Catholics (unlike Wisconsin Catholics) are already speaking out on the side of liberty, self-acceptance, and equal justice under the law for gay people.
