The Winona Municipal Airport, Max Conrad Field, has been adopted by the local chapter of the Experimental Aircraft Association under a program sponsored by the Minnesota Department of Aeronautics.
The Adopt-An-Airport program provides opportunities for local civic and community groups and/or individuals to “adopt” the airport, which means they volunteer to assist the airport manager or operator with activities. About 35 of Minnesota’s 153 public use airports have been adopted.
EAA Chapter President, Russ Marsolek, said the Winona EAA Chapter does activities that are aimed at developing positive relationships between the community and its airport.
Max Conrad, the namesake of both the airport and Winona’s EAA chapter, promoted getting people, especially kids, interested in aviation. Chapter members take several dozen kids for rides each year under the EAA’s Young Eagle program. The Chapter will also work on projects that enhance the attractiveness of the airport.
