The 26th Buffalo County Historical Society Backroads Tour will be held on Saturday, September 24, 2011, beginning at the Roadhouse Bar, in Czechville, working its way up Highway 88 to Yaeger Valley where we will see the Great River Organic Milling Company and Suncrest Gardens Farm. The tour will continue across the bluff on Belvidere Ridge Road, coming back down the valley on Blank Road to County Road E. On County Road E, there will be the Harmonia Hall, a new addition to the National Register of Historic Places as well as the old Waumandee Mill, and we will end at St. Boniface Catholic Church.
This is a self-guided tour, and tour booklets will be made available that day at the Roadhouse Bar from 10:30 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. Extra brochures will be available at St. Boniface as well as at our office following the tour.
This year’s tour will meander throughout Alma, with points of interest such as Buena Vista, the Alma Area Museum, Buffalo County Veterans Memorial, Wings Over Alma, Heritage Hall, the Alma Cemetery, the Sherman House, the Alma American Legion and Lock and Dam #4 all included in the tour. Not all of the locations will be giving tours inside, but we have arranged for two tour groups to tour the Lock and Dam at noon and 1 p.m. In addition, we are working to allow visits to the churches along Alma’s Second Street.
There will be lunch available to purchase from the women’s group of St. Boniface Catholic Church at the church as well as the opportunity to sit and share your memories with those at the church building.
Please mark your calendars now, and come with us on this wonderful drive back in time through a few of Buffalo County’s backroads and visit some of its wonderful cultural icons. If you have any questions, please contact the Buffalo County Historical Society at 608-685-6290.
