Buffalo Co. Public Health October services (10/02/2011)
Buffalo County Public Health will offer the following health screenings and services in October.

Women, Infant, & Children (WIC) Clinics. Buffalo and Pepin County residents are served by the Buffalo-Pepin WIC Program, headquartered in Alma. WIC is a preventative health and nutrition education program for eligible women (pregnant, breastfeeding or postpartum), infants, and children under 5 years of age. WIC serves families who are at or below 185% of the federal poverty level and who have a health or nutrition need. The program provides nutritious food; nutrition education; and health screening for growth, anemia, and lead poisoning. Clients are seen by appointment only at the clinics listed below; please call to schedule an appointment.

Immunization Clinics. Buffalo County DHHS typically offers a variety of vaccinations to the public, including vaccinations for children, HPV (Human Papillomavirus Vaccine) for adolescents, and Tetanus boosters (Td or Tdap) for adults, many of which are free of charge to qualifying individuals. As a reminder, adults can carry pertussis or whooping cough and transmit it to children who are not fully protected so please make sure you get your one-time dose of Tdap if you are around young children and it has been at least five years since your last tetanus booster.

If you have had a recent change in health insurance and/or vaccines are not adequately covered or your provider no longer accepts BadgerCare, you are welcome to receive immunizations through the public health department. Please call to schedule an appointment.

Free Radon Test Kits. Radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the United States. The initial radon test kit for Buffalo County residents is free. If leaving a message or sending an email, please give your name, address, phone number, email address, and number of individuals living in your household.

Free Dental Services. Oral fluoride supplements are available for individuals 6 months through 16 years of age. A water test for those not on fluoridated city water supplies is required to determine the existing level of fluoride in your water; this test can be obtained from the Health Department. In addition, the Health Department offers a new fluoride varnish program called “Shining Smiles” for children up through 10 years of age and pregnant women who are Medicaid (MA) eligible. Fluoride varnish prevents tooth decay and cavities from forming. Please call for more information and/or to schedule an appointment for fluoride varnish.

Free Breast and Cervical Cancer Screening.

The Wisconsin Well Woman Program (WWWP) pays for preventive health screening services such as mammograms and pap tests to women 35-64 years old with little or no health insurance coverage. Covered services are available from a variety of nearby health care providers at no cost to the woman. There is no premium, co-payment or deductible. Call the Health Department to find out if you are eligible or to learn more about this program.

To schedule appointments, if needed, or for more information about any of these screenings and services, please call Buffalo County Public Health at 608-685-4412 or visit our website at www.buffalocountypublichealth.com
