Let’s not rush to use chemicals (03/18/2012)
From: Charlie R. Smith

Mr. Gallien is so right in his letter addressing chemical control of the Emerald Ash bug.

During the Dutch Elm episode in the 1970s, the use of chemicals through spraying and injection proved ineffective in controlling the spread of the disease. The eventual answer was a program involving a thorough inspection, detection and eradication.

As of now the big issue in the Winona area is frac sand and its threat to the ecology and environment, thus the VIPs are overlooking the potential results of chemical control of the Emerald Ash bug.

The chemical industry is big business with much power and influence.

Let us reconsider, slow down and reevaluate.

I was the state licensed and certified inspector during the Dutch Elm epidemic.
